WE NEED YOUR HELP!
By now you have all seen the destruction caused by hurricane Katrina. The pictures are no less then horrific. I have spoke to Aeries 1083 Baton Rouge La. The one bright spot of the conversation was that structurally they faired "well". The other news is not so great they are one hour out side of New Orleans they have been inundated with thousands of people fleeing to them. There is also a lot of looting to report. THEY NEED OUR HELP! When I asked them what they need most they said "anything" it will all be used and greatly appreciated They need everything. There is a particular need for baby items. Now is the time to show what "People Helping People " is really about.
Now through Oct 1st I am asking for anything you can donate. Food, diapers, water no matter now small it may seem. After Oct 1st the donations will be gathered, boxed up and sent directly to Aeries 1083 . I have seen your generosity many times before and have believe with all my heart we can do this. Any help you offer will be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions I can be reached at (518) 470-0191 Thank you in advance lets show our fellow Eagles just how much we care.
Thank you

JIMMY DURANTE CHILDREN’S FUND The Eagles have done a lot for many. The Aerie and Auxiliary members have every reason to be proud of our many accomplishments. I think that our Jimmy Durante Children’s Fund and child abuse project has become one of the greatest of all our achievements. We have extended a helping hand to mentally and physically impaired children and also, to mentally and physically abused youngsters through this fund. The fund was named in honor of one of the worlds most beloved human beings and an active, life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Jimmy performed, without charge, at fourteen consecutive Grand Aerie Conventions. At his first appearance at a Grand Aerie Convention in 1961, Judge Bob Hansen asked Jimmy about his fee for performing. Jimmy replied: don’t even mention money judge or I’ll have to mention a figure that’ll make ya sorry ya brought it up.” “What can we do then?” asked Judge Hansen. “HELP DA KIDS” answered Jimmy and help them we have.

The Eagles have raised over $19 million, but best of all . . . every single dollar of that amount is at work today making life just a little more worth living for some pretty special little kids who deserve all the love and help we can give them.
Jimmy Durante will live forever in the world of show business. He will also live forever in the annals of the Fraternal Order of Eagles through the fund named for him and which we will continue to support in honor of his memory.
I have been given the honor of being named the Eastern Regional Chairman of the Jimmy Durante/Child abuse Fund for the 2005-2006 Fraternal year. This year as you plan your Charity Drives, please consider having a drive for this very deserving fund.

Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts
The members of the Fraternal Order of Eagles across the United States and Canada join the World in praying for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The scale of the tragedy is hard to comprehend as is the magnitude of the relief efforts required to return the weary and challenged people of this region to some semblance of "normalcy". While the Board of Grand Trustees is looking at a way that the Eagles can make a difference in the clean up and rebuilding, financial aid is immediately needed on a very large scale. At this time the Grand Aerie Fraternal Order of Eagles encourages contributions to the organization of your choice to ensure that all possible aid is received quickly and without an additional layer of administration.

For more than 100 years the Fraternal Order of Eagles has devoted its efforts to helping humanity. We encourage our members to work toward any efforts to serve the needs of any and all that have been affected by this tragedy.

Larry Robillard Give Tom Hammond Advice (and he takes it!) Humor
Larry Robillard and Tom Hammond were driving down the road drinking beer. Tom said "Hey, there's a police road block up ahead. We're gonna get busted for drinking and driving."
"Don't worry Tom", Larry replied, "We'll just pull over and finish drinking these beers, peel off the labels and stick them on our foreheads, then throw the bottles under the seat".
"What for?", asked Tom.
"Just let me do the talking, OK?" Larry said.
They finished their beers, threw the empty bottles under the seat, and each put a label on their forehead. When they reached the roadblock, the sheriff asked, "You boys been drinking'?"
"No, sir", said Larry,"We're on the patch".
Their Bail was $5,000.00 each.

HONESTY  -  On their last Eagles trip, Larry Robillard came screaming out of the motel bathroom to tell Tom Hammond he'd dropped his (Larry's) toothbrush in the toilet. So Tom went and fished it out and threw it in the garbage. Larry stood there thinking for a moment, then ran back to the bathroom and came out with Tom's toothbrush. He held it up and said with his charming little smile, "We better throw this one out too it fell in the last trip we took together."

Tyler Zielinski has been chosen to represent NYS for the National Muscular Dystrophy Foundation. Actor Jerry Lewis holds a yearly event for this foundation. His grandmother Joann Zielinski is the current President of the Rotterdam Auxiliary, and his Father Shawn Zielinski and his Grandfather Ted Zielinski (not shown) are members of Rotterdam Aerie. Also shown in the photos are Mark Hilton President of the Rotterdam Aerie and the NYS Aerie and Auxiliary Presidents Dan Curcio and Cathy Caruso.
The photos have been sent into the Eagle magazine and NYS Secretary Robert Yager sent out an e-mail in which the Grand acknowledged the receipt of the picture and said that it would be included in the Eagle Magazine.
Tyler was a very nice young gentleman and he had a wonderful time at dinner that night, and stayed for a while and enjoyed the entertainment.  His grandmother and the rest of the family were obviously very proud of Tyler.

Lambertis Gibbs, the president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Post 1253 , left, Richard Mosher, a past president, both of Ithaca and Rick Nelson, of Newfield, the vice president, talk about receiving a waiver from the Tompkins County Board of Health to permit smoking in a portion of their club. Nelson referred to a list of the club's recent charitable giving as he explained how the loss of revenue that followed the smoking ban has hurt the club's charitable giving.
02/10/2005
Ithaca Aerie #1253 Overcomes New York State Smoking Ban
ITHACA -- For now, the smoking room in the Fraternal Order of the Eagles No. 1253 is two green metal chairs and a tin can that greet visitors outside the front door. Within weeks, though, the club will become the first establishment where smoking is permitted since the Tompkins County Legislature passed a law in August 2003 outlawing smoking in bars and restaurants.
The Tompkins County Board of Health Tuesday approved its first waiver to the New York State Clean Indoor Air Act. The board ruled that the Eagles were able to show a loss of income since the smoking ban took effect, and were able to provide a separate room where smoking will be allowed
"They showed they had a significant decrease in income since the enactment of the ban," said John Andersson, director of environmental health services at the Tompkins County Health Department. "They clearly had a loss of income."
According to figures submitted to the Health Department, the Eagles revenue dropped from $92,343 in 2003 to $57,327 in 2004. The revenue drop almost crippled the organization's ability to donate to charitable causes, members said. Donations went from $60,000 before the ban to $12,000 after it went into effect.
"It made it very difficult for us to pursue our charitable work," said Rick Nelson, the club's vice president. "But we still ran our fund-raisers and tried our best to help local charities first."
The Eagles will be allowed to permit smoking in a 24-foot-by-25-foot room on the side of its Cecil A. Malone Drive building, called the North Social Room. A wooden partition separates the room from its main bar area.
An existing exhaust fan will run to ensure smoke does not drift into the other parts of the building and the room has separate heating and air conditioning, according to Health Department records. A separate entrance to the room will also be built.
"It is important our nonsmoking members and guests are not faced with secondhand smoke they have no choice about," Nelson said.
Like many clubs and bars, the Eagles lost patrons following the state's enactment of the smoking ban in 2003.
"One of the interesting things that has developed since the ban took effect is that people go to clubs where smoking is permitted," Nelson said. "Some of our more militant smokers we can't get back if they don't have a smoke to go along with their beer at the bar."
The Eagles decided to poll their membership, which is about 800 people, to see if it should pursue a waiver. The decision to go forward was made and the club applied in December.
After some consultations with the Health Department, the matter went before the Board of Health on Tuesday. Nelson said the waiver process can be intimidating.
"There is the perception that even if you apply through the state waiver process, you can't get a waiver in Tompkins County because of the county law," Nelson said.
"We have respect for the law," said Lambertis Gibbs, the club's president. "We've worked within it. Fighting it is not the issue. Cooperating is what you need."
But compliance for the Eagles, and others, has hurt business, they said.
"You have to try compliance to demonstrate it didn't work for you," Nelson said.
The outdoor chairs and the tin can was the solution for the Eagles.
"That is how we have complied with it," Nelson said. "We put our coats on and go outside. But there was a lot of complaining."

2005 Spring Conference Location Moved

The 2005 New York State Eagles Spring Conference will not be held in Addison. Addison withdrew it's bid for the conference. Two Aerie's, Watertown and Elmira expressed an interest to host this conference. The State Aerie thanks both of them for stepping up and expressing an interest in hosting the conference. After much consideration, the State Executive Board decided to award the conference to the Elmira Aerie. The Watertown Aerie is still scheduled to host this years (2005) Fall Conference. Watertown is ready for us in the fall and have assured us that their will be plenty of rooms for all. As always, the Watertown Aerie was there to help and we all know this year's fall conference will be enjoyed by all.
01/16/2005
This year's Eastern Regional Conference is scheduled to be in PA.
The PA State Executive Board was to decide who was going to host the conference this past weekend.  They've postponed awarding the conference and should decide by March 1, 2005.
