05.09.2012 Child Protection about to get better in New York THE NEW YORK STATE AERIE FRATERNAL ORDER OF EAGLES for Special Needs Kids. Government Relations Committee Let's help the Governor get this passed! Once this program is up and working in New York, perhaps the Governor's office will give us a hand introducing his program nationwide. Dear Fellow New Yorker, Today, a New Yorker named David came to Albany to talk about his son David Jr. who was born with a congenital birth defect that left him with a learning disability and seizures. David Jr. has lived in group homes for much of his life and sadly, in some cases, he suffered from abuse and neglect at the hands of the workers who were supposed to be looking after him. In one instance, David Jr. was hit repeatedly on the head by a worker wearing a large ring, leaving bruises and bumps across his skull. His father was outraged, but he had no place to go to complain and protect his son. In order to safeguard the civil rights of over 1 million New Yorkers with special needs and disabilities, like David Jr., Governor Cuomo today proposed legislation to create a new Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. The Governor’s Justice Center will give our state the strongest standards and practices in the nation to protect these vulnerable New Yorkers. The Justice Center will have a Special Prosecutor and Inspector General who will investigate reports of abuse and neglect and prosecute allegations of criminal offenses. It will also include a 24/7 hotline run by trained professionals and a statewide register of workers who have committed serious acts of abuse and will be prohibited from ever working with people with special needs and disabilities. Click here to read more about the Governor's proposal. We cannot create the Justice Center until Albany passes the Governor’s legislative proposal and we need you to help make it happen. Please go to www.Justice4SpecialNeeds.com where you can: •Sign up to get email updates from the Governor’s Office •Contact your State Senator and State Assembly Member •Share your story via video testimonial Also please forward this email to your family and friends, follow us on Twitter @NYGovCuomo using the #Justice4SpecialNeeds hashtag, and join us on Facebook. Let’s help give over 1 million people with special needs and disabilities the protection and justice they deserve.
